Tests of more than 700 preschoolers' packed lunches found that fewer than 2% of the meats, vegetables and dairy products were cool enough to be safe, according to a US study.
One in six US residents gets food poisoning every year, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), but it is unclear how many cases are caused by lukewarm sack lunches.
The study by Fawaz Almansour, a doctoral student at the University of Texas in Austin, was the first to check how the food that children take to school is doing in terms of health about ninety minutes before they eat it.
"It was a shock when we discovered that more than 90% of the perishable items in these packed lunches were kept at unsafe temperatures," Almansour said.
According to his study, published in Pediatrics, some 705 lunches packed by parents for children in full-time daycare centers were checked for the temperature of perishable food items and the number of ice packs included.
The CDC says that perishable foods kept between 4 to 60 degrees Celsius (40 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit) for more than two hours are no longer safe to eat.
Some 39% of the lunches had no ice packs, while 45% had at least one. Some 12% were kept in refrigerators.
Still, 88.2% of lunches were at ambient temperatures.
"Even with multiple ice packs, the majority of lunch items were at unsafe temperatures," Almansour and colleagues wrote.
Almansour said the study had been an "eye-opener."
"It shows there is a problem," he added, recommending that lunches be packed with lots of ice packs and refrigerated once the children arrive at school.

When you feel that your iPad needs more attention than it gets these days, now that it isn’t really a novel product or anything, you’d go for the extreme. This means that a fake representation of a leaking faucet, that’s actually an iPhone/iPad stand would do the trick. It’s true that the WTF-expression-triggering stand is something in itself since it is made of ABS faucet parts and polycarbonate. It’s for those who have a miniscule artistic sense to appreciate its awesomeness.
There’s no price attached to the Elecom Faucet iPhone/iPad stand. But what we can gather is the fact that it is available in blue, clear, black and white colors.

What the Galaxy S line of phones has done to the world cellphone market is public knowledge and there may be many of you reading this who will agree whole heartedly. That’s what makes the possibility of the next best thing, the Samsung Galaxy S II, coupled with LTE, a total rage! It may be the phone called ‘Celox’ that has been expected on the circuit for a while now. We’re uncertain if the images we see here are authentic but they tell us of some cool specs like a Qualcomm APQ8060 processor, LTE support for data speeds of up to 100Mbps, Android Gingerbread, Samsung’s Touchwiz 4.0, a 8-megapixel camera, a 4.5-inch WVGA Super AMOLED display screen, GPS, Bluetooth 3.0 and 16GB memory with microSD expansion.
Wow! That’s a lot we’re looking forward to. And to good avail! Hoping to see the Samsung Celox make it big, with a better name and a quicker release.

The next generation Wireless standard 802.22 will now be able to cover as much as 12,000 square miles, says the latest announcement from IEEE. The new standard is primarily for Wireless Regional Area Networks or WRAN which uses the white spaces left in the TV frequency spectrum. It is expected to increase the reach of internet connectivity in large areas which are densely populated.
The WRAN will now be able to deliver up to 22 Mbps without interfering with existing TV broadcast stations. The network will work with a series of base stations like current wireless network and the only change required would probably be a new box. As some see it, this could probably usher in an era where you might be able use the same wireless network at work and home, as long as they are a part of the same circumference.

Nokia has finally waded into deeper waters, with plans to launch its first Windows-based phone later this month. And it isn’t really surprising that Nokia had to finally move to Windows, to save itself from the Android revolution. The phone will be unveiled at the annual GamesCom trade show in Cologne, Germany on August 17th. Also, three Xbox 360 consoles and three Windows Phones built by Nokia will be given out as part of a raffle. Now everyone’s pretty much left confused as to just why would the Finnish phone manufacturer would chose to unveil a Windows-based phone at a game trade show. All we can do for now is guess, and hope Nokia’s newest brainchild doesn’t disappoint.

Electricity supplied from Nissan LEAF lithium-ion batteries can power an average Japanese household for two days

New LAUNCHES

Nissan today unveiled a system which enables electricity to be supplied from the lithium-ion batteries installed in Nissan LEAF to ordinary households, as part of its comprehensive efforts toward the realization of a zero-emission society. The new system was unveiled at ‘Kan-kan-kyo’, a house built in front of the Nissan Global Headquarters by Sekisui House Ltd. With this system, Nissan LEAF can be used as an electricity storage device for houses in preparation for power outages and/or shortages. The lithium-ion batteries can store up to 24kWh of electricity, sufficient to power an average Japanese household for about two days. This system can not only supply electricity from the vehicle but also charge it to the vehicle. Current Nissan LEAF owners will also be able to use this system.
Through this system, electricity stored in Nissan LEAF can be supplied to a house by connecting the car to the house's electricity distribution panel using a connector linked to the LEAF's quick charging port. Nissan believes this system will allow households to be supplied with a stable amount of electricity throughout the day and reduce the burden on the current power supply by charging and storing electricity in Nissan LEAF with electricity generated at night or through sustainable methods such as solar power, and using it during high demand periods.
