Way back in the old days I bought a keyboard for my Palm V, thinking that I would be able to type into it and become a proto-ultraportable ninja. That never worked, and I worry that Logitech is bringing us more of the same with this dump of tablet accessories including a $70 keyboard, Bluetooth mouse (for Android tablets only), and wireless speakers. The keyboard and speakers work with both iPads and Android devices.
The devices will be available at the end of the month and the mouse goes for $50 while the Bluetooth speakers cost $100. I saw these things last week and found them sufficiently cool but I worry that adding a keyboard to the tablet mix may be a bit of overkill. Have you been using a Bluetooth keyboard with your goodies? Yes? No?

The "world's cheapest" tablet computer in india

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India launched what it dubbed the world's cheapest tablet computer Wednesday, to be sold to students at the subsidized price of $35 and later in shops for about $60.

Most of India's 1.2 billion people are poor and products such as Apple Inc's iPad are beyond the reach even of many in the fast-growing middle class.

"The rich have access to the digital world, the poor and ordinary have been excluded. Aakash will end that digital divide," Telecoms and Education Minister Kapil Sibal said.

The government is buying the first units of the lightweight touch-screen device, called Aakash, or "sky" in Hindi, for $50 each from a British company which is assembling the web-enabled devices in India.

A pilot run of 100,000 units will be given to students for free, with the first 500 handed out at the launch to a mixed response. It supports video conferencing, has two USB ports and a three-hour battery life but some users said it was slow.

India has a reputation for creating affordable products that are easy to use and sturdy enough to handle its rugged environment -- from Tata Motors' $2,000 Nano car to generic versions of pharmaceuticals.

Two years in development, the paperback book-sized Aakash may help the government's goal of incorporating information technology in education, although critics were doubtful of its mass appeal.

Despite being a leader in software and IT services, India trails fellow BRIC nations Brazil, Russia and China in the drive to get the masses connected to the Internet and mobile phones, a report by risk analysis firm Maplecroft said this year.

The number of Internet users grew 15-fold between 2000 and 2010 in India, according to another recent report. Still, just 8 percent of Indians have access. That compares with nearly 40 percent in China.

The Aakash is aimed at university students for digital learning via a government platform that distributes electronic books and courses.

Testing included running video for two hours in temperatures of 48 degrees Celsius (118 degrees Fahrenheit) to mimic a northern Indian summer, said DataWind, the small London-based company that developed the tablet with the Indian Institute of Technology.

Rajat Agrawal, executive editor of gadget reviewers BGR India, said the 660 mhz processor from U.S. company Conexant Systems was "decent" for the price, but warned the machine seemed slow and the touch screen not very agile.

"Because of the price there is a lot of excitement," he said. "People might use it initially but if it is not user friendly they will give up within a week."

After first giving them out for free, the government aims to sell them to students for $35 next year. A retail version will be sold in Indian shops for about $60.

The device uses resistive LCD displays rather than a full touch screen and connects via wireless broadband. DataWind CEO Suneet Singh said future versions would include a mobile phone connection, making it more useful in rural areas.

The launch last week of Amazon's Kindle Fire shook up the global tablet market, with its $199 price tag and slick browser a serious threat to Apple's iPad.

Like the Kindle Fire, the Aakash uses the Google Android operating system.

Some of the mainly middle-class technology department students at the event said it needed refinement but was a good option for the poor.

"It could be better," said Nikant Vohra, an electrical engineering student. "If you see it from the price only, it's okay, but we have laptops and have used iPads, so we know the difference."

Some 19 million people subscribe to mobile phones every month, making India the world's fastest growing market, but most are from the wealthier segment of the population in towns.

NEW DELHI: HTC has launched its first Windows Phone 7.5 smartphone, Radar, in India. The device to run on the most recent version of Windows Phone, known as Mango, sports a 3.8-inch LCD touch screen display and is powered by a 1-GHz Snapdragon processor.

A dedicated camera button provides easy access to the Radar's 5-megapixel camera, even if the smartphone is locked. It comes in at 4.7 by 2.4 by 0.4 inches, and has 8GB of on-board storage.

It packs 1520 mAh non-removable battery, which is claimed to last up to 10 hours of talktime on GSM and up to 8 hours on 3G.

Dell launched a new ultrathin laptop in China on Friday called the XPS 14z, which is slated to arrive in other markets later this year to take advantage of the coming holiday shopping seasons.
Dell is marketing the XPS 14z as the world's thinnest, fully featured laptop with a slot for a DVD drive. In terms of thinness, it measures 23 millimeters (0.9 inches) and is built with an aluminum case, making it resemble Apple's MacBook Pro line of laptops.

The laptop has a 14-inch HD display screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. Users can choose to buy Dell's XPS 14z with either Intel's second generation Core i5 or Core i7 processors. Dell claims the laptop has a 7-hour battery life. In China, the starting price of the laptop is 7,699 yuan (US$1,205).
Dell launched the device first in China, right before the country's National Day holiday. In a statement on the product launch, Dell noted that China has become the world's largest PC market. In the second quarter, the country surpassed the U.S. in PC sales and shipments, according to research firm IDC.
Dell is the world's second largest PC vendor. But the company is at risk of losing that position to rival Lenovo, which is the fastest growing among the world's top five PC vendors. Lenovo's chairman said earlier this month, he expects his company to overtake Dell in market share by the end of this year.
While Dell's strength has been in the U.S. market, the company is focusing more on developing markets, said Tracy Tsai, an analyst with research firm Gartner. In Asia, 14-inch laptops have been the most popular among consumers, she added.
However, the XPS 14z's price could be unappealing to most Chinese consumers. In Asia, PCs in the $600 to $800 price range tend to do best among mainstream consumers, Tsai said.
Dell is launching its XPS 14z as PC vendors move toward selling more ultrathin laptops. At the end of May, chip maker Intel announced plans to push for a new class of thin and light laptops known as "Ultrabooks," in an effort to improve portable PCs. Dell said the XPS 14z is not an Ultrabook.
The XPS 14z is however part of a trend by the PC industry to create more value with laptops and make the user experience similar to smartphones and tablets, Tsai said. Intel and PC vendors want to reduce laptop boot up times, give them longer battery life and also make the devices lighter, she added.
"They are trying to inspire users to do more things on their PCs," she said. "I think that's the point of the ultrathins and the Ultrabook. It's a kind of evolutionary process. PCs are evolving to the next stage."

The performance upgrades are indeed welcome. We're never ones to pass up more speed in a mobile device, and if Apple can make that happen without hampering battery life, then all the better. The promised times are impressive, but manufacturer promises can be just that. Though the Samsung Epic Touch 4G and Motorola Droid Bionic had rated talk times of 8 hours and 10.8 hours, respectively, they actually lasted a less stellar 7 hours each in CNET's lab tests.

During our brief demonstration of the iPhone 4S, the handset did operate smoothly and speedily. We weren't able to test it against the iPhone 4 in a side-by-side comparison to notice exactly how much of a boost the new A5 chip offers, but a change for the better is definitely there.

Cheapest computer $35, To be Launched in India

A total new computer generation is on the verge of exploding with India launching a new computer available at an unbelievable cost of $35 especially for its younger studying generation. The tablet PC as light as 400 grams comes loaded with all the possible normal computer applications. Mr Kapil Sibal India’s Union Human Resource Development Minister unveiled this magical gadget earlier this week in a press conference.

A touch screen device, which is wi-fi enabled, developed by the research teams of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). The PC supports a 256 MB RAM and is powered by a 2-watt system and also has solar cells support as an alternative power. The device has a seven inch diagonal screen and an inbuilt processor which makes it conveniently portable and can be connected to any external keyboard through USB port. There is no hard disk but a memory disc of 2 Gigabyte which can be enhanced up to 32 Gigabyte if required.

This gadget will not only have access to the windows OS but also Linux, giving it much user friendly touch and keeping it low on cost. In order to support high tech education system in the country the government of India has given an extra edge support to this gadget and is looking forward to lower the prices up to $20 and even cheaper in the near future.
