War Texting' can let hackers unlock your car through SMS

Just a couple of days back we learnt that Apple’s new battery technology can allow hackers to make laptops explode, thus highlighting how certain unnoticed glitches in technology can prove to be perilous. Today, there is yet another instance with cellular-based automotive roadside assistance services like GM's OnStar and BMW Assist which can be used to remotely unlock cars. Some engineers have worked on means that can let them crack this technology and unlock cars through just SMS and their calling it “War Texting.”

Don Bailey and Mathew Solnik of security company iSEC Partners came up with the demonstration wherein they set up their ad-hoc GSM network and communicated with the in-car system, posing as authorized servers because the proprietary protocol used was not secure enough to keep them at bay. And they accomplished the task of unlocking the car by simply send a message from a laptop to the car’s computer. They’ll be showcasing their findings at the upcoming Black Hat USA conference in Las Vegas.

Wrongulator is a calculator that's never right

When you're up to manage some mischief at the expense of devastating damage to someone, there's no thinking twice. So the Wrongulator is one such device that appears to be a perfectly normal calculator, with a solar charger above, but ends up being something that can topple sales charts and mess with your soul, more than you head. It's so evil that it manages to produce a wrong answer every time you go for some quick calculation. This evil charm may backfire brutally though, like all pranks.

It could also make some lose their minds, or worse, get people fired. So make sure you aren't going for the vital damage.

SK Telecom begins testing its Smart Cart Service in China

Grocery shopping is an important but painstakingly annoying chore but developers have tossed around fairly helpful apps that help you get through it with some ease. SK Telecom thought of doing something more than other had already did. It is presently running a dry run of its new service which syncs your shopping list from a smartphone app and sends to its tablet PC-equipped Smart Cart. This real-time service will use indoor positioning to provide you information on product info, tips and discounts. The in-cart display will have Wi-Fi capabilities and will make use of AR to provide coupon clippers a high-tech solution which looks a swell given the present inflation rates.

SK-Telecom's-Smart-Cart-1.jpg

If SK Telecoms squares up having a successful pilot run in China's Shanghai Lotus Supermarkets, we can expect it to become a widespread phenomenon soon. And of course, more than consumers, it would be incessant marketers that will be targeting this service to make their offerings visible to the users.

Free WiFi networks

The Chinese today are all too used to visiting the internet for free in places like bars, restaurants, hotels and bookstores, with free WiFi hotspots turning commonplace amongst the people. However, the good old times are about to change, as officials will now keep a wary eye on WiFi networks around, banning free-access to customers who’ve gotten used to logging onto the internet for free while visiting these businesses. Web activity will be monitored via software which will cost an additional $3100 to set up, and ignoring this could lead to fines of up to $2300! We’re pretty sure people in China who’ve been enjoying free unattended internet access all this while are going to be left frowning once this ban comes true.

Ikelite Waterproof camera case by Nikon costs $1,400

Nikon has decided to increase the longevity of their cameras be introducing a cool, new water-resistant case called the Ikelite camera case. Of course, it's as efficient as a desert to ensure your camera doesn't get a drop on it. What I really like about this waterproof case is the fact that it has two side handles that help control your camera better, as well as a cool magnifier. The case, in all its efficiency, can handle depths of up to 200 feet. Well, that could impress us, until...
03.jpg
The astronomical price of this case gives you the shudders. It's the mere nerve of Nikon to rely on the fact that people who use their cameras are in such desperate need for a water-submersing sheath that they would spend $1,400 on it.

Mindscape pulls Nabaztag project off the internet; rabbit-devices go numb

If you’ve probably heard of the rabbit-like ambient internet device called the Nabaztag project that showed up a while ago, we’ve brought solemn news. Mindscape, the brains behind the project, has abandoned it, pulling the service offline, leaving the devices useless, with theviolet.net and nabaztag.com going off air. And for those who haven’t had a taste of the project, this one gave access to MP3 sharing, supported voice commands, and also sported features like weather forecasts, stock reports, alarm clocks, news, and RSS feeds. And for those who’ve still got their eyes on this one, Mindscape was kind enough to give out the source code for the device and its servers! So hopefully, alls not lost for the Nabaztag community yet!

Apple has more cash reserves

First it was the great economic meltdown, tremors of which were felt largely across the world, and it’s the debt ceiling that speaks of trouble in USA as of today. The treasury department reported that US government had an operating cash balance of $73.8 billion at the end of the day on July 27. And just then, someone moved to Apple’s statistics and found that the last earning reported by the company showed $76.2 billion in cash and marketable securities. So the American tech giant seems to have more cash than world’s biggest economy at the moment. I think there couldn’t have been any other perfect example to highlight the gravity of the situation. God Bless America.

iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S might look like

It’s obvious that as we get close to the rumored launch period of iPhone 5 and its mediocre mid-range sibling called iPhone 4S, the tech town is going to be buzzing with blurry facts and images. Here is a grainy shot of iPhone 5 and our friends believe an Apple employee was carrying one of these when he was shot unawares. The adjoining picture here is of iPhone 4S which would resemble its big brother in lot of ways but without the glass chassis on the front and back. Apple, some mercy please?
